It wouldn’t surprise you that we love coffee at IncaFé, we actually love it so much that we sometimes wonder what the world would be like without coffee. We not only try to craft the highest quality coffee for you to enjoy, we also want to make sure we can keep on enjoying this delicious fruit for many years to come. In 2008 we were the first coffee roastery to become carboNZero certified, and now with more than a decade past we feel it is time to share the results with you.
With this blog we aim to give you better insight in our motivation to become carboNZero certified in 2008, how Enivro-Mark has helped us significantly reducing our carbon footprint, share the results and impact of our carboNZero certification and hope to inspire other companies to consider doing the same. With many scientist considering CO2 emissions one of the main contributors to climate change, the questions should really be why not carbon neutral?
Why we are committed to neutralise our carbon footprint
We truly believe that great coffee starts at the farm. In order to create a sustainable business model we have to respect the soil, the water and everything involved with the process of crafting superior coffee. We for example cultivated more traditional coffee processing methods. These traditional methods require less water than more mainstream coffee processing methods and contribute to the natural flavour you find in our coffee.

Even though we actively invest in more sustainable production methods it will remain impossible to eliminate the CO2 emissions, which are the result of sourcing and roasting coffee. So it is great to be able to work with Enviro-Mark, who have been able to accurately measure our green house gas emissions and put strategies in place to significantly reduce the impact of these emissions.
New Zealand’s first carboNZero certified coffee roastery
What does it mean?
Being a carboNZero certified coffee roastery means that we are actively measuring and reducing our carbon footprint. We buy credits that offset our CO2 emissions and these credits are used to e.g. fund the reforestation of native trees in New Zealand. The CO2 that is sequestered by these projects is set off to our CO2 emissions and as a result we can effectively neutralise our carbon footprint.
How does it work?
With the help of Enviro-Mark we have been able to accurately measure our greenhouse gas emissions, develop strategies to manage and reduce the impact of our business operations on our greenhouse gas emissions and offset our remaining CO2 emissions with verified carbon credits. Thanks to independent audits and third-party certification we can ensure an accurate and consistent measurement of our carbon emissions and make confident claims about our carbon neutrality.
Ten years of carbon neutral coffee roasting
By August the 31st this year we have purchased 1320 TCOe carbon credits in certified projects. The carbon credits were used for a native reforestation projects in New Zealand. Over the past ten years we have contributed to planting between 7 – 8 hectares of native forest since we started. These projects helped us reduce our CO2 emissions to 0.89 kg CO2e/ kg of coffee. We think this is great, not only because it positively contribute to a climate neutral planet, we also get to see more trees like the ones below in the future.
The CO2 sequestered by the 1320 tCO2 carbon credits used to fund the reforestation of native forests in New Zealand equals the emissions of:
Carbon neutral, why not?
With the growing awareness for climate change and more and more people actively trying to lower their footprint, the question for a business like ours should really be, why wouldn’t you commit to a climate neutral business model?
